Strength & Conditioning for Badminton

Badminton requires high levels of cardio fitness, explosive power and balance. Here are some useful resources to help our players develop:

Cardio Fitness

Developing cardio fitness is essential for badminton. Players must sustain a high work rate without excessive fatique.

Using a Heart Rate Monitor

Heart rate monitors are a great way to track your training and understand your cardio fitness.

The heart rate during play or training, relative to your maximum heart, rate is a good indicator of your fitness level. These are generally described as Zone 1 (resting) to Zone 5 (highest). The Zones help us understand how the body is burning energy in our muscles and responses such as the build up of lactic acid in the muscles.

Many smart watches have heart rate monitoring built in or you can get dedicated heart rate monitors that can be worn on the wrist or chest. These are often more accurate than smart watches.

Developing Power

Badminton requires players to move quickly from a static position to reach the shuttle. This requires explosive power in the legs and core.

Balance

Good balance will help players to maintain a good position when playing shots. In particular the head should be still as the shot is played.

Core strength is essential for good balance. This can be developed through a variety of exercises.
